Chevron, Texaco, Ecuador and Lago Agrio — a compelling story

 

There are few stories as painful to tell as the environmental disaster Texaco perpetrated in Ecuador’s Lago Agrio. Now the clean up and compensation are in the hands of Chevron, and it looks like the company is doing everything it cans to minimize the compensation it will have to pay.

This is a story worth checking. For the ones who can get by reading portuguese, check the story on today’s São Paulo paper Estadão “The Chernobyl of the Ecuatorial Forest“.  And for everyone, check Joe Berlinger’s new movie, Crude— which according to the NYTimes, tackles the subject with absolute intellectual integrity.

There is something to be said for oil companies owning up to past mistakes and honestly trying to right the wrongs…
